The Butler County Health Department has received 8 confirmed cases of Shigella. 3 of the 8 cases are from the same household. We continue to investigate the additional five cases for a common source.
Shigellosis is a group of bacteria called shigella characterized by diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and nausea or vomiting. Diarrhea may or may not contain blood or mucus. The infected person may have severe symptoms or no symptoms at all. The illness usually lasts for 4 to 7 days.
Proper handwashing is essential in preventing the spread of Shigella, as well as, disinfecting diaper changing stations, and disposing of soiled diapers properly. If an individual is diagnosed with Shigellosis, ensure proper hand hygiene is maintained, avoid children going to daycares or group play settings while still experiencing diarrhea, avoid swimming pools, and preparing food or drinks for others.
